The odds of getting in...

It is time for a thorough lesson in why Heaven is an impractible ambition:

Ignoring for the moment that a requirement of entering Heaven is death, that will be looked into later; think about the number of people on the earth at the moment, you should be imagining aproximately 8billion plus people [I know that is a hard thing to imagine but do it]

Now consider Heaven is as said a place in the sky, which surrounds the Earth - now the surface area of Heaven would be by my calculations roughly 5 times that of the earths given its height and enveloping nature.
It should therefore easily be able to fit in it 8 billion people. Now consider all of the people of the present, past and future - the number should be somewhere in the high trillions. Let's consider humans become extinct in another 1000 years, and assume the number is then let's say 70 trillion. How would all of those souls fit is the obvious question? Even were we working on a tiered representation of Heaven as used in the "Ferren and the ..." series, there would still be insufficient room for everyone, past, present and future.

So how does heaven fit people without being overcrowded. Well deities introduce preconditions for entry to Heaven which procludes those not meeting the required standards from gaining entry. Given the preconditions of the Christian faith and it's subsiduary brands [ie catholicism, baptism...ad infinitum] which mount to roughly 400,000 preclusions, it is safe to say that with all of the preclusions/preconditions imposed upon the faithful and the populace of the Earth in general from all of the religions [past, present and future] and ignoring the overlaps, there would be close on 69.999 trillion. Thus leaving a mere .001 trillion souls which can make it to Heaven. thats what 1 million souls in Heaven, in an area much much larger than the Earths surface. No wonder they say, Heaven is a lonely place.

Given the much smaller area and higher density of the alternative Hell, you would assume that souls would not be allowed to go their either by preconditions, sadly all of these preconditions are set by the preconditions to enter Heaven, by failing just one of these you meet the precondition of Hell. The reason Hell is still a viable option is of it's ingenious cremation system which actually recycles the souls back into the Earth as ash and dirt. Hell has therefore been considered an ecological benefactor and a superior system to Heaven, however it has contributed significantly to global warming.

Now one of the most important preconditions of Heaven is "absolution" should you decide that you repent you will be absolved of all of the attrocities you have commited, however with the number of other preconditions the percentage of absolutions actually granted entry is tight. Coupled with the fact that you apparently should be religious before you die, in fact all of your life. As you can see this principle of devotion doesn't make sense should you be able to repent on your deathbed, why live a life slaving to the wills of your deity. When at that final moment all you have to do is go "Hey, i fornicated, cheated, robbed, murdered, drunk to excess and enjoyed every minute of it but now I repent." Given the devotion of religious subjects it is safe to say that absolution is not a sound principle and cannot be relied upon to gain entry to heaven. Therefore has been excluded from the possible entry options.

If you make it to Heaven you are indeed the lucky one, have fun searching for the other lucky one.
If you like everyone else end up in Hell or purgotary, die happy because at least you know you have achieved something as well as aiding in global warming.
